  9.      RE:      ZIP file format and new archive utilities

  12.     Due to the recent unpleasantness regarding the file format for 
  13.    archive files, PKWARE Inc. and Infinity Design Concepts Inc., have 
  14.    collaborated in designing a new file format for storing files in an 
  15.    archival manner. As with all things, this is an evolutionary 
  16.    process. The original archival files in the CP/M world were called 
  17.    library files (.LBR), later we had .ARC files, both of which had 
  18.    arbitrary structures construant to archiving data. PKWARE and IDC 
  19.    have long noticed some shortcomings in the current archive file 
  20.    format and have therefore developed a new format. The new format is 
  21.    called the ZIP format and is described briefly in this document and 
  22.    is hereby commended to the public domain.

  24.    One predominant reason that precipitated the new format was the fact 
  25.    that one single organization has tried to lay claim to something 
  26.    that can honestly belong to no one.
  27.   
  28.    Several new features of the ZIP format, open new doors as far as the 
  29.    usefulness of an archive utility goes.
  30.   
  31.     1. Files may now be archived across multiple diskettes.
  32.     2. A centralized AND a distributed directory structure
  33.        help ensure the retrievability of ZIPped data
  34.     3. 32 bit CRC calculations help ensure the integrity of
  35.        compressed data
  36.     4. The centralized directory will make file access much
  37.        faster.
  38.     5. Newer compression methods offer better and more efficient 
  39.        data compression.
  40.     6. Pathnames may now be included in ZIP files.
  41.     7. Filename lengths can vary with the host system.
  42.   
  43.    It is our fervent desire that .ARC file users make the conversion 
  44.    over to the new ZIP format, so that we may all get back to a level 
  45.    ground of fair competition.
  46.  
  47.    IDC and PKWARE jointly and together hereby decree that;
  48.   
  49.     1.   The ZIP file format is given freely into the public       
  50.          domain and can be claimed neither legally nor morally by any 
  51.          individual, entity or company (or any other sentient creature 
  52.          in the universe.)
  53.   
  54.     2.   The .ZIP file extension denoting the ZIP format is given 
  55.          freely into the public domain as above.
  56.   
  57.     3.   Any person or company may utilize the ZIP format in any
  58.          manner so desired for profit.
  59.   
  60.     4.   Anyone may receive a copy of the format specification,       
  61.          by sending a SASE to either IDC or PKWARE.
